Come in italiano, i connettivi in inglese sono parole che legano due idee e servono a rendere più scorrevoli le frasi. In inglese ce ne sono molti tipi, di tempo, di causa, introduttivi ecc. Cosa sono i connettivi in inglese?

I connettivi in inglese sono detti anche legamenti perché il loro compito è legare, connettere due idee. Un esempio semplice:  and, la nostra “e” italiana, è uno dei connettivi in inglese che permettono di articolare più idee nella stessa frase. Permettono di creare una logica nella narrazione, per questo si chiamano anche connettivi logici.

In inglese i connettivi logici sono molto numerosi. Servono ad esprimere la causa, l’ordine temporale, la condizione, ecc. Qui sotto troverai i connettivi in inglese più frequenti, così potrai memorizzare il loro uso e capire le differenze tra uno e l’altro. Ti saranno molto utili nel parlato perché ti permettono di esprimerti con più scioltezza, come un madrelingua (e abbiamo anche quel che fa per te, se vuoi migliorare la tua pronuncia inglese).

Introduttivi

Sono i legamenti usati per introdurre un’idea, quindi si usano per lo più all’inizio della frase.

  • First / First of all : primo, prima di tutto. Seguito da un elenco di più idee espresse > First of all, I’d like to thank you for being here. Then, let me introduce you my business partner.
  • In / At the beginning : all’inizio > At the beginning we thought to work as a team.
  • To begin : per iniziare > To begin I’d like to talk about what we want to achieve.

Additivi

I connettivi in inglese che esprimono un aumento sono i più frequenti. In italiano usiamo comunemente “e”, la congiunzione che in inglese è and.  Ma ce ne sono altri…

  • Secondly ovviamente usato dopo first (secondo) > First, you did a good job. Secondly, you delivered in time.
  • Then / Next : dopo, poi, allora > I went to the bar, then I met him. Next thing I remember, we were drunk.
  • Also / too : anche. Also si usa soprattutto all’inizio della frase, dopo il soggetto, mentre too si usa alla fine della frase > You should wear a scarf too.
  • As well as : e anche, e inoltre > She brought me a cake as well as a present.
  • Moreover / furthermore : inoltre / oltretutto > Moreover, Grace broke a glass too!
  • In fact / as a matter of fact : infatti > You misunderstood, as a matter of fact.
  • Actually : in realtà, in effetti, davvero > After all these texts, I can’t wait to actually meet John.
  • Anyway : in ogni caso, comunque > I didn’t mean to be harsh with Kevin anyway.
  • Besides : inoltre, tra l’altro > The movie was bad. Besides, I don’t like that director.
  • By the way : a proposito, tra l’altro > By the way, I saw your mother at the grocery store yesterday.
  • In the same way : nello stesso modo > The braidsmaids were dressed in the same way.
  • In other words : detto altrimenti, in altre parole > I’m very busy these days; in other words, I can’t help you anymore.
  • That is to say : cioè > That dress is very particular. That is to say, I won’t never wear it.
  • In addition : oltre a ciò, inoltre > Paul brought some ice cream in addition.
  • Such as : come, ad esempio > I like flowers, such as roses and sunflowers.

  • Above all : soprattutto > I want the party to be fun above all.

Opposizione

Per esprimere un’idea contraria a quanto detto finora si usano i connettivi inglesi di opposizione.

  • However : tuttavia, in qualunque modo, però > I hear you. However, I disagree.
  • While : mentre, tuttavia, finché > While this works for me, I can see why it’s not good for you.
  • Instead of : invece > Fred should be studying more, instead of hanging out so often.
  • Nevertheless / nonetheless : ciononostante, tuttavia > I don’t agree with you completely, nevertheless I’ll help you.
  • If not : se no > If it’s a sunny day tomorrow we can go to the sea. If not, let’s make a nice dinner at home.
  • Whereas : invece, mentre > My father likes to sky whereas my mother is a good swimmer.
  • Unlike : a differenza di > Unlike my brother, I like vegetables.
  • Contrary to : contrariamente a > Contrary to the weather forecast, it was a beautiful day today.
  • In comparison (to) : in confronto, rispetto a > Greg’s a genius; my grades are bad in comparison.
  • In spite of : malgrado, nonostante > In spite of your efforts to explain me, I didn’t understand, sorry.

Condizione

Per esprimere una condizione.

  • If : se > If you really like pizza, you should try Mario’s.
  • Unless : a meno che > I can come with you, unless you want  to go alone.
  • As long as / so long as : purché, finché, fintantoché > Her mother told him he could play soccer as long as his grade were good.
  • Otherwise : altrimenti, sennò > Behave, otherwise you won’t go to the concert.
  • In case : in caso che > In case you get hungry, there’s a meatlof in the fridge.
  • Supposing : ammesso che, supponendo che > Supposing they accepted our invitation, what will we have for dinner?

Causa

Per esprimere un legame di causa ed effetto, ci sono vari connettivi in inglese che puoi usare. In particolare, because e puoi usarli sia all’inizio della frase che in mezzo, per legare le due idee.

  • Because : perché > Hillary was promoted because she worked very hard.
  • Because of : per questo, a causa di > We can’t sell our home easily because of the plumbing problems.
  • Due to : a causa di > Sally was late due to tube strike.
  • Thanks to : grazie a > My party was a blast thanks to this great DJ.
  • For : poiché > Tom brought her a doughnut to make up for he knew her very well.
  • As : siccome, dato che, poiché > The dog ran away as it fears pigeons.
  • Since : poiché > Since Ben knows her well, he will toast her at her birthday party.
  • This is the reason why : questo è il motivo per cui, per questo > His new novel is very different from the previous ones. This is the reason why it’s selling bad.
  • This is why : per questo > Erin you look great! Thanks, this is why I love my hairdresser!
  • For this reason : per questo motivo > Those trees have some disease, for this reason they will be cut down.

Finalità / Conseguenza

  • So : quindi > Kate will move to France so she’s learnig French.
  • For : per > The eagle is making a nest for her baby birds.
  • So as to : di modo che, allo scopo di > Let me know when you decide so as to I can organize my schedule.
  • Thus / Therefore : perciò, quindi, di conseguenza > The student didn’t like his teacher therefore he didn’t study.
  • In consequence / consequently : in conseguenza, allora > Lisa forgot to set an alarm, consequently she’s late for work.
  • As a result : di conseguenza > I spent my weekend sleeping. As a result I was very active on Monday.
  • Though : nonostante, malgrado > The waiter was impeccable though his clients were very annoying.
  • In this / that case : in questo/quel caso > It’s getting cloudy, maybe it will rain. In that case, we have umbrellas.
  • That is why : perciò > I need a shoulder to cray on, that is why I called you, my friend.
  • In order to : per, al fine di > In order to have a good harvest, the farmer has to protect his field from crows.
  • Finally : finalmente > Finally the mechanic fixed my car.
  • At the end / in the end : alla fine > In the end, my grandmother was right.
  • At last : infine > My daughter is going to take her last exam at last.
  • In conclusion / to conclude : in conclusione, per concludere > In conclusion, our firm has had a great year.
  • To sum up : per riassumere > To sum up my presentation, we need to invest more in marketing.
