Christmas has come and gone in a blink of an eye, but the holidays aren’t quite over yet! It’s time to look back on 2017 and reflect on all that you’ve accomplished and think about the future and what you wish to see in it. Would you like to lose weight and eat healthy? Read more books? Or work to improve your happiness? How about a New Year’s resolution that’s always high on all of the MosaLingua team members’ lists? Learning a new language!
You may have thought about learning a new language as your New Year’s resolution, but have pushed it to the sidelines for a more common resolution like losing weight. It can be easy to keep pushing off your goal to become proficient in a new language. This is especially the case with how busy life can be. However, here at MosaLingua we think that learning a new language should be at the top of your list and making it your New Year’s resolution is a perfect way to kickstart your language learning goals. Here’s why:
Why Learning a New Language Should be Your New Year’s Resolution
For Every Language You Learn, You’ll Put Off Dementia By Five Years
One study performed by York University of Toronto found that learning a new language has a powerful effect on the brain and can even delay dementia. The study found that those who learned a new language developed dementia, on average, five years after those who only spoke their native tongue. Before you look into preventative drugs to keep your brain healthy, consider simply learning a language!
Earn More Money
Of course not everything is about money, and there are plenty of other reasons to learn a language besides earning more of it. However, the fact that learning a second language adds an average 2 percent increase in people’s yearly salary can be the push you need to learn a language for your New Year’s Resolution. Although 2 percent may not seem like much, in the long run it adds up to quite a bit. Keep in mind that the language you decide to pick up has an impact in how much you earn. German, for instance, is the most lucrative, coming in at an average 3.8 percent yearly increase.
You’ll Become a Traveller Not a Tourist
Learning a new language comes with many benefits when you travel from understanding menus to knowing if you’re being talked about. Knowing whats going on around you because you understand the local language will allow you to enjoy traveling to a heightened extent. Even if you’re not quite fluent, knowing some vocabulary and grammar of the language will be much appreciated by those who you connect with in their tongue. Having a deeper knowledge of the local language will let you have real conversations with those you meet, as well as allow you to make new friends and network with potential business connections.
Your Productivity and Happiness Will Improve
If you’re not motivated to learn a language based on any other reason, do it because it will make you a happier and more productive person! Learning a new language helps you solve problems, multi-task, make decisions, and improves your memory and attention span. It also improves your sense of well being.
You’ll Become a Better Hire
The ability to understand and speak a second language gives you a much broader range of employment opportunities and will allow your resumé to stand out amongst hundreds of others. When browsing job listings, you’ll often find “speaking a second language” to be a desired if not required skill. In this day and age, employers want well-rounded employees who understands other cultures.
